About

The Carbon Neutral City Planner was developed as an extension of a research project carried out in partnerhsip with The Sustainable Infrastructure Group in The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto and The Carbon Competitive Cities Program at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

The original project, Getting to Carbon Neutral, was aimed at determining best practices for reducing urban carbon emissions through changes to urban infrastructure.

The project catalogued a series of low-carbon projects from around the world, which you can explore on the project website. In addition, a series of estimation guidelines were developed that practitioners can use to estimate carbon savings from such projects.

The case studies and estimation guidelines were compiled into a freely available report entitled Getting to Carbon Neutral: A Guide for Canadian Municipalities [PDF]. The executive summary, Climate Change Mitigation: a Strategic Approach for Cities [PDF] is also freely available.
